What makes Barefoot Maiden’s jewelry stand out from others?
Every design is one-of-a-kind or a very limited edition. None are mass-produced. Each piece is handmade by Kathy in her southern California studio.
Wirewrapping gemstones with sterling silver or goldfilled wire is her preferred technique. Each stone is individually wrapped and attached to the other, creating a continuous chain of precious metal and gemstones. These encrusted chains are substantial in weight, using a larger gauge wire than is found in most mass-produced department store jewelry.
Kathy travels to trade shows on a regular basis and hand selects gemstones. This enables her to find the best quality stones available.
All designs start with the gemstones. Their colors, textures, shapes and the myths that they’ve inspired. Kathy works with both opaque and transparent stones. The opaques are big, bold, sometimes very unusual, often rustic and earthy. They become chunky pendants and handwrapped rope chains. Smaller faceted transparent stones, such as prehnite, amethyst, and aquamarine, yearn to be intricate wirewrapped fairytale creations.
